At ABS we know that parents can help prevent angry and violent behaviors in their adolescents.
Learning that your adolescent has a mental or behavioral disorder or disability can be a traumatic experience. Parents have many questions and concerns in coping with their child’s needs and their own feelings. Emotional support from another parent, who has an adolescent with behavioral, mental health or substance abuse problems, is helpful in coping with these challenging experiences and feelings. Parents learn how to understand their adolescents thoughts and behaviors and learn how to extinguish codependent and or enabling behaviors. Parents can learn how to set clear expectations and firm boundaries from their out of control teens.
Research studies have shown that much unpredictable adolescent disruptive behavior including anger and violent behavior can be decreased or even prevented if certain risk factors are significantly reduced or eliminated. Most importantly, efforts should be directed at dramatically decreasing the exposure of children and adolescents to violence in the home, community, and through the media. Clearly, violence and anger leads to anger and violence.
